Derived from the from the Latin 'curculionem' (elongated snout) and from the Greek 'ichthys' (fishes), in reference to the relatively elongated snouts of the fish species included in this genus.

Named for professor Claudio Oliveira from the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), Botucatu, São Paulo State, in recognition of his dedication and contributions to the studies of Neotropical freshwater fishes. A noun in the genitive case (Ref. 95507).
